SEDOM Center provides programming for students throughout McHenry County who function within the moderate to severe/profound range of mental retardation. The curriculum is developmentally appropriate to meet the needs of students who require adaptations in the areas of motor, communication, and self-help, and who may demonstrate significant medical needs. Emphasis is placed on positioning and handling of students, proper feeding techniques, assistive technology for communication and mobility, life skills, vocational skills, recreation/leisure skills, and integration into the community. SEDOM Center programs are characterized by a comprehensive program of physical, occupational, and speech and language therapy as well as nursing services and concentrated supervision and care. Therapy and instructional goals are developed in a collaborative effort, by each student's educational team, which meets regularly with the principal. All classes at the Center are focused on programming that supports SEDOM's vision of "Effecting a positive difference in the lives of people with special needs to help them to become healthy, fulfilled, and productive members of their community. |
